There is a version of software reviewing that never leaves the vendor’s website. You read the feature list, you watch the demo video, you take the marketing copy at face value and repackage it with a star rating. Readers deserve better than that, and the decisions they make about project management tools – decisions that affect how their teams work, how their budgets are tracked, and whether their projects land on time – deserve analysis grounded in actual use.
How we evaluate
Every tool we review is tested through a real account, not a trial arranged through a vendor’s PR team. We work through the actual setup process a new user would face, assess the quality of onboarding, and evaluate the platform against the tasks that matter most to project professionals: creating and assigning work, setting and tracking deadlines, managing dependencies, monitoring budgets, generating reports, and communicating with team members. We note where the experience matches the marketing and where it falls short.
What we assess
Our evaluations are structured around five core dimensions. Task management covers how work is created, assigned, prioritised, and tracked. Collaboration covers how teams communicate, share files, and coordinate within the tool. Reporting covers the quality and accessibility of progress data. Ease of use covers the learning curve and the consistency of the interface. Pricing transparency covers what a real implementation costs, not just the headline figure on the pricing page. We apply this framework consistently so that comparisons across tools are meaningful.
Editorial independence
No vendor has any input into our editorial process. We do not share review drafts before publication, and we do not adjust our conclusions in response to commercial relationships. When a tool charges a premium price and delivers a sub-premium experience, the review says so. Our affiliate partnerships, explained in full on our disclosure page, generate revenue for the site. They do not generate favourable coverage.
